District Councils’ Network welcomes new Secretary of State

Commenting on the appointment of The Rt Hon Michael Gove MP as Secretary of State for the Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government, Cllr John Fuller OBE, Chair of the District Councils Network said:

“On behalf of all district councils across the country, I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Michael Gove as our new Secretary of State.

“District Councils are the embodiment of the levelling up agenda, close enough to communities to understand them, large enough to effect positive change across much of this nation. We hold the levers to rebuild the national economy one local economy at a time.

“Across the country, we’ve stepped up to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic – keeping essential services, such as refuse collection and planning, going throughout, taking on new responsibilities, and supporting the national effort to protect the vulnerable.

“As we look to build back better from the pandemic, there are undoubtedly challenges and opportunities ahead. These include making sure we build the right homes in the right places involving everyone in our local communities, devolving powers and resources to local councils, and investing in our communities to help drive our economic recovery and to level up.

“We look forward to working closely with the Secretary of State to support district councils in meeting the needs of their communities and fuel our national recovery.”
