DCN Responds to £500m COVID-19 Funding Allocations For Councils

July 17 2020

Responding to the funding allocations for the extra £500 million in COVID-19 government funding for local authorities, District Councils’ Network finance spokesperson, Cllr Sharon Taylor, said:

“This extra funding is welcome and will give some help to district councils, which face significant financial challenges, to continue to lead the grassroots response to the pandemic.

“However, District councils face ongoing cost and income challenges. We urge the Government to provide much needed clarity on the promised income guarantee as soon as possible.

“District councils’ budgets have been severely impacted by lost income streams, such as car parking, leisure centres, council tax and business rates, and while this additional government support will go some way to plugging these revenue sources, we call on the Government to keep their promise to cover all additional costs incurred in responding to the pandemic.

“Districts are determined to lead their communities out of the COVID-19 crisis and support the national economic recovery, which is why we are urging the Government to use the forthcoming Spending Review to provide a long-term financial settlement for councils.”
