Congratulations to Great Yarmouth, the Council of the Year!

Published: 13 June 2024

Great Yarmouth Borough Council was named Council of the Year at the LGC Awards last night.

The Norfolk district beat fellow DCN members Dorset Council, Gravesham Borough Council and Oxford City Council, as well as non-DCN member Knowsley Council, who were all shortlisted for the accolade.

“Through foresight and vision for its place and people this council has delivered tangible regeneration and impressive economic development whilst also leaning into every area that could improve lives for its population, even if not its direct responsibility,” LGC’s judges said of Great Yarmouth.

“The judges were unanimous in their view that the kindness, energy and commitment on show from staff, members and partners is infectious and a beacon for the sector. This council is a perfectly timed example of how a small local authority with a relatively modest budget can punch well above its weight through leveraging significant financial investment but also partnership capital.”

Also honoured At the awards was Lancaster City Council which won LGC’s Net Zero Award. Its work on addressing climate adaptation and mitigation through revised planning policies was described as a “shining example for other local authorities to emulate”.

Congratulations to everyone at Great Yarmouth and Lancaster from everyone at DCN!
